Did I Install My CPI Runway Correctly?

(Tech Tips, CPI Products) Permanent link

CPI’s Cable Runway Products install quickly and can be cut to form smooth curved transitions around obstacles. Even in the easiest installations there may be one or two places that require a cut or unique transition. The tips shared below from our Technical Support Team may help you with your next cable runway install.

When installing cable runway, how do you know which side is the top?
By design, the up side of our runway is the side with the cross member near the upper edge of the stringer. The welds used to fasten the cross members to the stringers are on the underside of the junctions between the two pieces and were designed to handle a compression stress. Using the runway upside down places the welds in tension and reduces the magnitude of the stress, and thus the load, the weld can handle. Additionally, orienting the cross members to the top of the runway allows a flat surface for supporting cables when turning corners at T-junctions between pieces of runway, minimizing potential damage resulting from exceeding the cable bend radius from “hair-pinning” the cable.

How often do I need to support my runway?
CPI recommends supporting runway every five feet or less. View the chart below to determine if this load rating will work for your application. Be sure to check all codes, rules, and regulations in your area. Utilize the service of a structural engineer and follow his/her suggestions based on your unique application.
