As the 14th most populated county in the nation, Washington State's King County (home to Seattle) was in need of a state-of-the-art data center. Not only did this new data center need to meet rising demand in a fiscally and environmentally responsible manner, it had to ensure the smooth operation of many IT-based support services including property tax appraisals, records, legal services, elections, regional parks and facilities, law enforcement data, public transit, online bill pay, pet licensing, web hosting and more.
To achieve this goal, the King County IT (KCIT) department began by researching the demands of its community to ensure that the county's new 4,225 sq. ft. data center would be both highly efficient and reliable. By using the industry's latest data center innovations, including custom-made cabinets, to craft a complete solution, KCIT turned to Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI) to build a data center that would utilize the latest technologies in thermal management to provide environmentally sound solutions in creating an energy efficient data center. CPI offered a variety of flexible solutions, which included custom products that were designed specifically for King County to effectively meet the needs of the public.
The King County Data Center, now located in Sabey Data Center Properties' SDC52, is part of a new modular wholesale co-location facility located in Tukwila, WA at the "Intergate East" facility. Thanks to the area's natural climate, this location provides King County with an optimal environment for use of CPI's Passive Cooling® Solutions to create an energy efficient data center. Enabling the use of evaporative economizer cooling that accounts for 50-70 percent energy savings, SDCP's installation design works well with CPI Passive Cooling, which successfully manages the airflow through, over, and around equipment cabinets to improve overall cooling effectiveness.
