ISO 50001 . Meant to establish a framework of
improved energy efficiency and management for organizations across
the globe, early estimates predict the new standard could
positively influence up to 60 percent of the world's energy
use.
While this voluntary standard exists for the public and private
sector, and all manner of industries and service areas, those of us
in and around the data center marketplace can't help but notice the
correlation between continued governance on energy consumption and
the ways in which data centers are helping drive the
discussion.
Interestingly enough, a recent report entitled "Growth
in data center electricity use 2005 to 2010 ," by Jonathan G.
Koomey, consulting professor at Stanford University, indicates that
power consumption in the data center increased by 36 percent over
the five-year period, far less than the initially forecast 100%
increase.
While the report offers a measured sense of relief for the
perceived energy consumption of data centers on the whole, new
standards such as ISO 50001 will further define, help regulate and
ultimately reduce unnecessary energy and power use across the
board.
