The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in both Greenfield and Brownfield infrastructure projects continues to rise among architects, contractors and builders who covet BIM’s ability to render life-like 3D views of a data center installation before the first slab is ever poured.

BICSI News magazine May/June 2012 coverThanks in no small part to BIM’s increased acceptance and use among industry professionals, Richard Lowes, CD, CWTS, recently profiled BIM’s impact on structured cabling in the May/June edition of BICSI News magazine.

The article, simply entitled, “BIM for Structured Cabling,” explores the benefits and challenges of BIM as it relates to the cabling environment, especially for those still relatively new to using the design tool itself.

“If you just started using BIM in your ITS design, you might find that you will have to develop customized families to show devices such as ceiling-mounted wireless communications enclosures,” Lowes states. Furthermore, “determining when to start populating the architectural background so that you are not re-populating the same information” is a consideration stressed by Lowes towards reaping the rewards of your BIM investment.

Speaking of which, CPI’s industry-leading BIM database includes over 200 product specific drawings, many of which represent our cable management and cable pathway products in detail.

Those with a CPI website account can access these drawings instantly, while new site visitors are encouraged to create a profile and gain free access today. Jeff Cihocki, Global eContent Specialist
