CPI Case Study: Phoenix Children's Hospital

 Permanent link

Phoenix Children's HospitalAs one of the largest healthcare facilities in the country, Phoenix Children's Hospital relies on a multitude of support systems to help provide care to young patients throughout Arizona and the Southwest. Of these support systems, the data center at Phoenix Children's is tasked with maintaining a reliable network of electronic medical records (EMR) and other critical info to ensure patient care.

To meet that task head on, Phoenix Children's Hospital recently partnered with Kitchell Contractors Inc. and Sparling electrical engineers and technology consultants to design and create a highly energy-efficient data center as part of a larger $538 million facility expansion. Because Phoenix Children's is also a nonprofit institution, the value placed on their "Green Guide to Healthcare" principles also factored heavily into making energy-saving and cost-saving decisions towards a new data center.

In doing so, Phoenix Children's Hospital, at the recommendation of Kitchell and Sparling, chose Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI) to collaborate on product specifications and customization for its new data center facility. This included an expansion from 2,000 square feet with 22 cabinets and racks to 6,000 square feet with 48 cabinets and racks, while also ensuring support for a new EMR system, faster network connectivity, a larger database, and the assurance of a Tier III level data center achieving N+1 redundancy for continuous operation.

Phoenix Children Hospital Case StudyTo make all this a reality, Phoenix Children's hot-aisle/cold-aisle design choice was supported by the advanced energy efficiency of CPI Passive Cooling® Solutions, which allowed the hospital to optimize the placement and operation of the perforated floor tiles providing flow of cold air. To isolate the hot exhaust air generated by equipment, both CPI's F-Series and N-Series TeraFrame® Cabinets were equipped with Vertical Exhaust Ducts - ultimately resulting in annual energy cost savings of 20% for Phoenix Children's Hospital.

"In the end, CPI had more options and an ability to customize to better meet the hospital's needs," said Kitchells's Senior Product Manager, Joseph Reitman.

Of course, be sure to read the entire case study, including how CPI thermal management accessories supported the passive cooling solution for the facility.
