Shanghai Tobacco, China’s largest manufacturer of tobacco products, needed to build a new disaster-recovery data center that was ready for the future. The company didn’t just need an infrastructure that would help reduce power usage and avoid downtime—it also wanted to have an Intelligent Building that would be a showcase for sustainability and reliability.
With many companies in China having to shut down operations temporarily because of government-rationed power use, the company decided that Chatsworth Products’ (CPI) pioneering Passive Cooling® solutions would be the perfect balance between green initiatives and the assurance of zero downtime.
The final solution encompassed a 360-square-meter room that deployed CPI Passive Cooling through a hot/cold aisle layout of 78
F-Series TeraFrame® Cabinets, each fitted with a Vertical Exhaust Duct.
This intelligent approach to airflow containment drastically reduces the amount of power needed by the room’s cooling units because it doesn’t take the added energy consumption of exhaust fans in the cabinet, which often work against IT equipment fans. Today, the company’s cabinet loads are running at about 8 kW, but as more and more equipment manufacturers continue to raise the heat threshold, this will likely increase with the years. The good news is that Shanghai Tobacco chose a solution that can save energy today and handle potential heat densities of up 30 kW in the future.
“They’ve got a data center now that they can use for the next 20 years. They didn’t plan for their needs today … they planned for years from now,” concluded Todd Heany, APAC Area Sales Director at CPI.
